Inspirations and Influences
No author does it all on his own. Here are some of the people whose words and works have helped me along the way.
J.R.R. Tolkien. The man, the myth, the legend. Without him, my chosen genre (and the world) would have been a much less magical place.
Susan Cooper. Her "Dark is Rising" sequence introduced me to fantasy literature. I still have a tattered copy that I read every year on my birthday, in honor of the Sign-Seeker.
Ursula K. LeGuin, the "Earthsea" series. The image of Elsabeth owes much to the Eaten One.
Robert Howard, the Conan stories. The economy of words, the iconic images, and the beautiful descriptions are instructive to anyone writing in the fantasy genre.
Maya Deren, "Divine Horsemen." The religion of Harrekh is not the religion of Haiti, but much of the imagery is similar.
Stephen King, whose "Dark Tower" series shows he has never been afraid of bending a genre or five.
There's only ever been one completely honest answer given to that question; and all writers are, to some extent, liars. My name is Nicholas Hylton. I was born in Edinboro, Pennsylvania; grew up just north of there in Erie; and attended college in Washington, DC. I live with Regina, my wife and inspiration, in the Arlington, Virginia, area.
